So many of you have so many memories of Harvey. I cannot possibly mention you all. I hope that in these few words you can find something to relate to. As a coach in the late 1950’s and early 60’s Harvey was coaching some of the finest athletes in the country. John Merriman competed in the final of the men’s 10000m at the Rome Olympics in 1960 supported largely by Harvey. Jean Sorrell won AAA Championships and represented Great Britain on the track, and is formerly a UK record holder over 440yds. Harvey played a big part in Jeans development, and it is important to note that at this time Jean advises that he talked to everyone, had a word of encouragement for everyone, and would advise anyone who wanted guidance. Some of you might be interested in this, Harvey finished last in a race with a time of 68mins for 10miles!! How times have changed, although a lot of disgruntled motorists might not think for the better. As a runner Harvey was a 56 for 10miles man with times just over 2hours for 20 and 3:14 for the Poly Marathon, Windsor to Chiswick. Race walking was in the family, with his father and an uncle regularly participating. Eventually Harvey was persuaded to give it a go. A 6th place in a County Championship led to the Intercounties. Following these successes came 6 British titles with numerous 2nd and 3rd placings. So Harvey was someone who could motivate, guide and encourage others whilst also being on top of his own game. A sixth placing at a world championship was followed by numerous medals, on the veteran stage. Pride of place amongst these were world championship gold for 30K and silvers for 20k. I suspect that his loyal supporter, Audrey was in attendance at each of these? How many of us can claim athletic or coaching success at this level? Harvey fulfilled both. In 1976 Harvey embarked on something that was little more than a walk in the park. The outcome of this meeting of people who jogged and walked a mile were people who wanted to run further. As the group ran further than the boundaries of Cassiobury Park, the embryo broke out of the shell and Watford Joggers was born. Alan Flint, a quality athlete of his time, with Watford Harriers, was also involved as the embryonic Watford Joggers took shape. So from the heady heights of coaching Olympian & other British Athletes Harvey is at grass roots level. So we now have a jogging club. A group of people just out for a run, looking to improve their health? Some of you will remember the first jogging boom? Coaching wise his talents had hit the buffers and where could he go from there? Hold on. New ‘talent base’ new challenges for an instinctive coach Remember that Harvey had a word of encouragement for everyone. This wasn’t limited to the 1950s and ‘60s, this was Harvey the man. Encouragement for everyone. How much time Harvey gave willingly to so many athletes, only Audrey will know. The athletics community can marvel at the achievements and coaching prowess of Harvey, but only Audrey knows how much time he gave to so many of us. So many people in this room had time freely given by Harvey. Audrey, Sandra, Nicola we are forever grateful for that. Along came Jose Waller, who would have thought that this enthusiastic long distance walker would go on to set age world records and win world championships? Remember ‘encouragement for everyone’. A lady turned up at the Joggers, but didn’t stay too long, we couldn’t keep up! Danielle Sanderson. Danielle ran fast marathons and represented England at the Commonwealth Games. Danielle wanted to run London to Brighton, so a new project for Harvey. Success at L2B and other ultras for Danielle enabled Harvey to become one of the UKA Ultra squad coaches. Trips abroad and a European record for Danielle ensued. Remember ‘Encouragement for everyone’ throughout this time supporting both Jose and Danielle, Harvey made time for other less talented but by no means less motivated athletes. Personally I am grateful for the guidance Harvey gave to me both as an athlete and in his help and support of my tenure as Chairman of Watford Joggers. At the Sun following this service there will be a display of Harveys medals. Most of us modern runners have a box or two for finishing, Harvey has over 150 medals for placing in various races!! Finally in 2012 Harvey got to perform on the world’s biggest stage. With a great debt of gratitude to his close friend John O’Connor, Harvey was able to take on the role of Gamesmaker. Manning water stations for the marathons and the 50k race walk, it was as if his time had finally come. There were no more chapters that could be written. Audrey, Sandra, Nicola, their families, friends, Watford Harriers, Enfield & Haringey Race Walking Section, Watford Joggers, there is no doubt that this man leaves a greater legacy than any Olympic games.
